Mabel Terry-Lewis

Terry-Lewis, Mabel Gwynedd

Terry-Lewis, Mabel Gwynedd (1872–1957), English actress, daughter of Kate Terry. She made her first appearance in 1895 with John Hare in Grundy's A Pair of Spectacles, and in 1898 was seen with her mother, who had been absent from the stage for 22 years, in G. Stuart Ogilvie's The Master. She then appeared in revivals of several of T. W. Robertson's plays, played Muriel Eden in Pinero's The Gay Lord Quex (1899), and Gloria Clandon in the first public performance of Shaw's You Never Can Tell (1900). Among her later parts were Madeleine Orchard in Martin-Harvey's production of After All (1902), based on Bulwer-Lytton's novel Eugene Aram, and Isabel Kirke in H. H. Davies's Mrs Gorringe's Necklace (1903). She retired on her marriage in 1904, and did not return to the stage until after the death of her husband, when she was seen in H. M. Harwood's The Grain of Mustard Seed (1920). She continued her successful career, playing in a number of revivals and creating some 30 parts, mainly in plays now forgotten. Among the best of her elegant and aristocratic characters were Dona Filomena in the Alvarez Quinteros' A Hundred Years Old (1928), Lady Bracknell in Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest (1930), and her last part, Lady Damaris in Pryce's Frolic Wind (1935). She was extremely popular in New York, where she appeared several times from 1923 onwards.
