James, M. R.

James, M. R. ( Montague Rhodes James) (1862–1936), a brilliant linguist, palaeographer, medievalist, and biblical scholar, was successively provost of King's College, Cambridge, and of Eton. He edited works by Le Fanu, wrote several volumes of distinguished ghost stories, many with East Anglian settings, including ‘Oh Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad’, which appeared in Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1904). More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary appeared in 1911, and his collected stories in 1931.
