Lyme Regis

Lyme Regis , town (1991 pop. 3,447), Dorset, SW England. The town is a tourist resort. Paleontological discoveries have been made in the blue Lias rocks quarried near Lyme Regis.

Lyme Regis, England/UK Lhonborth, Lim, Lime The early British name meant ‘Naval Harbour’. In the 8th century it was renamed after the River Lim, itself a Celtic name meaning ‘stream’. Regis ‘of the king’ was added in 1285 on the order of Edward I (1239–1307), King of England (1272–1307).
