Lung-men
Lung-men. A valley along the Yi river about 8 miles from the ancient capital city of Lo-yang in which patrons of Buddhism began carving out caves during the reign of Emperor Hsüan-wu of the Northern Wei dynasty (r. 500–16). These caves, intended as hermitages for Buddhist monks, are notable for the abundance of Buddha images and other statuary cut into their walls that are valuable not only for their artistic merit, but which also provide a window into the rise and fall of cults of particular Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
