Ludwig von Schwanthaler , 1802-48, German sculptor. Though he was a neoclassicist, his later works were more in the romantic manner and devoted to themes that appealed to the growing national sentiment. Overwhelmed by commissions for monuments and large decorative sculptures for the new palace, the Ruhmeshalle, and other buildings erected in Munich by King Louis I of Bavaria, he left the execution to a great extent in the hands of apprentices. In Munich there is a museum devoted to his work. His portrait of Mozart stands at Salzburg. The Metropolitan Museum owns his bronze Dancing Girl.

Siegen, Ludwig von (bapt. Cologne, 2 May 1609; d Wolfenbüttel, c.1680). German soldier and amateur artist who invented the technique of mezzotint. The earliest of his few surviving prints, a portrait of the Landgravine Amelia Elizabeth of Bohemia, dated 1642, was sent by Siegen to the Landgrave with a letter stating that the invention was his. Prince Rupert, whom he probably met in Brussels in 1654, perhaps learnt the technique from him.
