Western, (Pauline) Lucille
Western, (Pauline) Lucille (1843–77) and Helen (1844–68), American actresses, daughters of a comedian and his actress wife who, by a second marriage after his early death, became Mrs Jane English, the name by which she is usually known. The children toured with their mother and stepfather in a mixed entertainment which gave plenty of scope for their precocious talents in acting and dancing. Helen died before she could become well known as an adult actress but Lucille was noted for her playing of strong emotional parts in such plays as Mrs Henry Wood's East Lynne, the younger Dumas's Camille (The Lady of the Camellias), Taylor and Reade's Masks and Faces, and Kotzebue's The Stranger. One of her finest performances was as Nancy in a dramatization of Dickens's Oliver Twist. She died at the height of her success.
