Louis de La Trémoille

Louis de La Trémoille , 1460-1525, French general; grandson of Georges de La Trémoille. He commanded the army that attempted to secure Brittany for the French crown after the death (1488) of Duke Francis II . He distinguished himself in the Italian Wars , notably at Fornovo (1495), Marignano (1515), and Pavia (1525).

Denys de la Ronde, Louis ˈdenis də lä ˈränd (1675–1741) French military officer, spy, and explorer, born in Québec City, Canada. He was a member of expeditions that established the colony of Louisiana. Denys de la Ronde served on several voyages along the coast of New England, and his familiarity with the area and command of English led to his role as a French spy during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–13). He sailed into Boston to gather information on the British, but was found out and condemned to death, escaping through the intervention of the governor.

Bougainville, Louis Antoine de

Bougainville, Louis Antoine de (1729–1811) French maritime explorer. A veteran of the French and Indian Wars, a diplomat, mathematician and soldier, he commanded the frigate La Boudeuse on the first French voyage around the world (1766–69). It included a long interlude in Tahiti, which, among other Pacific islands, he claimed for France. Important botanical and astronomical studies were made during the voyage, of which Bougainville published an account in 1771–72.
