Anquetin, Louis
Anquetin, Louis (1861–1932). French painter, designer, and writer. He was born and brought up in Normandy and moved to Paris in 1882. Early in his career he moved in circles that included some of the outstanding avant-garde painters of the day, most notably his close friend Toulouse-Lautrec, and he was a pioneer of Cloisonnism. After about 1895, however, Anquetin's work became much more traditional, and he devoted much of his time to research into the techniques of the Old Masters, especially Rubens (he wrote a book entitled Rubens: Sa technique, published in 1924). He was a prolific draughtsman and made tapestry cartoons for the Beauvais and Gobelins factories. A collection of Anquetin's writings on art, De l'Art, was published in 1970.
