Longford

Longford

Longford county (1991 pop. 30,296), 403 sq mi (1,044 sq km), N central Republic of Ireland. The county seat is Longford . A part of the central plain of Ireland, it has level land with numerous small lakes, bogs, and marshes. The River Shannon and Lough Ree form its western border. Raising beef cattle is the principal occupation; oats and potatoes are the chief crops.

Longford, Australia, Canada, Ireland, UK, USA Ireland: a county with the local name An Longfort or Longphort ‘The Fortress’ from an ‘the’ and longfort ‘fort’ or ‘stronghold’. The former name was Annaly or Anale, but this was superseded in the 16th century.

Longford town (1991 pop. 6,393), seat of Co. Longford, N central Republic of Ireland, on the Camlin River. It is primarily a farm market. The Roman Catholic bishopric of Ardagh and Clonmacnois is there.
