America's beloved rocking chair comfortably passes test of time; Symmetry proves all-important in arranging long, narrow room Beds must be balanced in relation to window opening in boys' room Q: We want to convert a long and narrow spare room into a bedroom for two school-age boys. There's a large window on one of the 10-foot-wide walls, while the door and a closet are on one of the 20-foot-long walls. The original plan was to put the beds against the window wall, but I've been told it isn't healthy to sleep with one's head next to an outside wall. What's your opinion? And do you have any overall design suggestions? A: If that window wall isn't properly insulated, I can certainly see how sleeping next to it might present a health hazard. Otherwise, however, I doubt that it would be a problem. What concerns me more, as an interior designer rather than a doctor, is the spatial arrangement of the two beds. If you do intend to follow your original plan, I hope that the window is centered on the 10-foot wall where the beds are to be placed. Symmetry is essential in a room with the dimensions you cited. Healthy or not, the layout will look makeshift unless the beds are balanced in relation to the window opening. As an alternative, how about putting the beds on the 20-foot-long wall opposite the closet and doorway? Assuming these are standard-size twin beds, they'll easily fit there. Perhaps you can take some tips from the photo, which presents the sort of layout I'm describing. This boys' room was designed by Geoffrey Bradfield as part of an apartment included in a recent showcase tour in Manhattan. The arrangement here is a mix of movable, built-in and invented furniture. Those aren't exactly beds, for example. What you see are mattresses that have been placed on top of fabric-upholstered wooden platforms. One end of the bed has also been upholstered to serve as a head board, while the cushions and bolsters were covered in the same fabric as the base. In functional terms, this is a clever creation. The front of each platform has hinged doors that open to a sizable storage compartment for toys and sports equipment. As you can see, a shelved bookcase divides the beds and also helps demarcate a separate work area for each of the boys. Space was, of course, at a premium in this apartment. Desk tops have been suspended from the 10-foot walls at both ends of the room, with file drawers placed beneath them. No matter how functional, a design of this sort cannot be considered fully successful unless it contains a few playful elements. Bradfield has obliged by adding a crenulated crown molding to the bookcase divider and by installing a decorative wallpaper border depicting crests-of-arms of medieval knights. And please don't overlook that suit of armor standing off to the side. It serves here, aptly enough, as a clothes hanger!
