log·ger·head / ˈlôgərˌhed; ˈlägər-/ • n. 1. (also loggerhead turtle) a reddish-brown turtle (Caretta caretta, family Cheloniidae) with a very large head, occurring chiefly in warm seas. 2. (also loggerhead shrike) a widespread North American shrike (Lanius ludovicianus), having mainly gray plumage with a black eyestripe, wings, and tail. 3. archaic a foolish person. PHRASES: at loggerheads in violent dispute or disagreement: council was at loggerheads with the government.

1. The wooden bitt in the stern of a whaling boat around which the harpoon line was controlled as it ran out after striking a whale in the days when harpoons were launched by hand.

2. A ball of iron attached to a long handle used for melting tar or pitch. The ball was heated in a fire to red heat and then plunged into the tar or pitch bucket.
