Smith, (Lloyd) Logan Pearsall

Smith, [Lloyd] Logan Pearsall (1865–1946),New Jersey‐born essayist reared in Philadelphia, educated at Haverford, Harvard, and Oxford, resided in England and on the Continent after 1888. His books of aphorisms and essays include Trivia (1902), More Trivia (1921), Afterthoughts (1931), the collection All Trivia (1933, revised 1945), and Reperusals and Re‐collections (1936). He also published The Youth of Parnassus (1895), short stories; two slight collections of poetry, Sonnets (1908) and Songs and Sonnets (1909); various pamphlets on English vocabulary; On Reading Shakespeare (1933); a biography of Sir Henry Wotton (1907); and editions of authors as various as Donne and Santayana. Milton and His Modern Critics (1941) is a defense of Milton and an attack on T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound. His autobiography, Unforgotten Years (1938), describes his Quaker boyhood, his acquaintance with Whitman, his activities as a bibliophile, and his experiences as an expatriate.

Logan Pearsall Smith

Logan Pearsall Smith 1865–1946, Anglo-American author, b. Millville, N.J. After 1888 he lived in England, studied at Oxford, and became a man of letters. His brief and exquisite essays were collected as All Trivia (1933). Other works include writings on the English language, a biography of Sir Henry Wotton (1907), On Reading Shakespeare (1933), Reperusals and Re-collections (1936), and Milton and His Modern Critics (1940).

Smith, (Lloyd) Logan Pearsall

Smith, (Lloyd) Logan Pearsall (1865–1946), man of letters, born in Philadelphia, spent most of his life in England. He was a founder of the Society for Pure English. His works include Trivia (1902), More Trivia (1921), and Afterthoughts (1931), collections of much polished observations and aphorisms; one of his more memorable, ‘People say that life is the thing, but I prefer reading’, indicates the nature of his success and limitations as an author.
