Logan, Australia, Canada, USA 1. Australia (Queensland): a river named after a Captain Logan who was killed here by Aborigines.2. Canada (Yukon Territory): a mountain named after Sir William Logan (1798–1875), founder of the Geological Survey of Canada.3. USA (Utah): named after Ephraim Logan, a trapper, or Logan Fontanelle, a friendly Native American chief.4. USA (West Virginia): originally Lawnsville and then Aracoma, it was renamed in 1907 after Logan, a Native American chief of the Mingo tribe.

Logan

Logan city (1990 pop. 32,762), seat of Cache co., N Utah, on the Logan River; inc. 1859. It is the center of an irrigated dairy and farm area, with huge cheese plants, other food-processing facilities, and diverse manufactures. Logan was founded (1859) by Mormons, and a Latter-Day Saints tabernacle (Logan Temple) and Utah State Univ. are located there. Cache National Forest is nearby, and Logan Peak is visible from the city.

Logan ♂, ♀ Transferred use of the Scottish surname, in origin a local name from a place so called in Ayrshire. Although it retains a distinctly Scottish flavour, the name is also used elsewhere in the English-speaking world, being particularly popular in Canada and New Zealand.
