Llanelli

Llanelli

Llanelli , town (1981 pop. 45,336), Carmarthenshire, S Wales, on the estuary of the Loughor (Burry) River. The town's industries include tin-plate works and steelworks. Pottery, glass, and chemicals are also made. Coal was formerly mined and exported from Llanelli; the docks closed in 1951. Nearby is the coastal town of Burry Port, where Amelia Earhart landed after her Atlantic crossing.

Llanelli Carm. Lann elli c.1173. ‘Church of St Elli’. Welsh llan. Elli is said to have been one of the daughters of Brychan, who gave the name of Brecon.
