Lindsey Lincs. (prouincia) Lindissi c.704–14, Lindesi 1086 (DB). Ancient district name, probably ‘island, or dry ground in marsh, of the tribe called the Lindēs’, from OE īg, ēg added to Lindēs ‘the people of Lincoln or of the pool’, see Lincoln.
