Liaoyuan

Liaoyuan

Liaoyuan, Jilin/China Xi'an ‘Source of the Liao (River)’ from láiyuán ‘source of a river’ and the river name. The city is also called Dongliao, this being an alternative name for the river. Founded in 1902, it was upgraded to county status in 1913. In 1948 it was renamed Xi'an, but to avoid confusion with the already existing Xi'an in Shaanxi province, the original name was restored in 1952.
