Lewes

Lewes , town (1991 pop. 14,499) and district, East Sussex, SE England. The county seat of East Sussex, Lewes is a farm market with light manufactures. St. Pancras priory was founded in the town in the 11th cent.; its ruins remain. In 1264, Lewes was the scene of a victory by Simon de Montfort, earl of Leicester, over Henry III.

Lewes E. Sussex. (to) Læwe early 10th cent., c.960, Lewes 1086 (DB). From the rare OE word lǣw ‘wound, incision’, here used in a topographical sense ‘gap’. The spelling with plural -s in DB and other post-Conquest sources is due to Anglo-Norman influence.

Lewes, UK, USA 1. UK (England): formerly Læwe from the Old English lw ‘incision’, here meaning a ‘gap’ between hills.2. USA (Delaware): founded in 1631 as a Dutch settlement called Zwaanendael, it was renamed in about 1685 after the Lewes in Sussex (now East Sussex), England, since it was the chief town in Sussex County.
