Leon Jouhaux

Jouhaux, Léon

Jouhaux, Léon (b. 1 July 1879, d. 29 Apr. 1954). French trade union leader As a pragmatic general secretary of the trade union CGT since 1909, he resisted attempts to bring the union under increasing Communist influence. In protest against the Munich Agreement, he unsuccessfully called a general strike. He was imprisoned in France 1941–3, and in Germany 1943–5. In opposition to the Communist majority in the CGT after the war, he founded the socialist CGT-Force-Ouvrière in 1947, which contributed to the marginalization of trade unions in French politics and society from 1945.
