Leeuwarden
Leeuwarden (Frisian: Ljouwert), The Netherlands The present name has evolved from the Frisian name with the first syllable, Ljou, coming from a personal name, and wert possibly meaning ‘refuge’. It has been suggested that a previous name was Lieuwarden to give ‘Guarded Place near Lime Trees’ from ward ‘guarded place’ or ‘watch tower’.
