Leduc, Ozias
Leduc, Ozias (1864–1955). Canadian painter, active mainly in his native St Hilaire, Quebec. His career was devoted principally to church decoration, but he also painted portraits, genre scenes, and still-life—mostly for his own pleasure or for friends. In 1897 he visited Paris, and his later work was affected by Symbolist ideas. He lived modestly and unambitiously, away from the main centres of art, but he was an inspiration to many of those who knew him, notably Paul Borduas, who said Leduc showed him ‘the way from the spiritual and pictorial atmosphere of the Renaissance to the power of illusion which leads into the future. Leduc's whole life shines with this magic illusion.’
