Lechfeld , plain near Augsburg, S Germany, drained by the Lech River. There in 955, King (later Emperor) Otto I defeated the Magyars and stopped their expansion into central Europe.

Lechfeld, Battle of

Lechfeld, Battle of (955) A major battle fought near Augsburg, in Germany, when the forces of the Holy Roman Emperor OTTO I defeated the MAGYARS. This put an end to their westward expansion and the long period of harassment which they had inflicted on the German empire.
