Lebor Gabála
Lebor Gabála, literally ‘Book of Taking’ or ‘Book of Settlement’, but usually rendered as ‘Book of Invasions’: a legendary history of Ireland and the Gaels, of fundamental and enduring importance to the shaping of Irish historical thought. The original Lebor Gabála, itself largely an amalgam of earlier materials, was probably composed in the second half of the IIth century. The text begins with the creation of the world and the origins of the Gaels; then describes Ireland's successive settlements by Cesair, granddaughter of Noah, Partholón, Nemed, the Fir Bolg (‘Men of Bags’), the Tuatha Dé Danann (the pagan gods, here euhemerized as magicians), and the Gaels or Milesians; and concludes with an account of the subsequent kings of Ireland.
