Moratín, Leandro Fernández de
Moratín, Leandro Fernández de (1760–1828), Spanish poet and dramatist, son of Nicolás Fernández de Moratín (1737–80), who disapproved of Lope de Vega and his followers and of the auto sacramental, and based his three tragedies on the strict laws of French neo-classicism. His son was also a neo-classicist, but unbent enough to produce an amusing satire on the extravagant drama popular in Spain at the time, entitled La comedia nueva o el café, aimed at the popular playwright Comella. Leandro's most successful play was El sí de la niñas (When a Girl says Yes, 1806), in which he defends a woman's right to choose for husband the man she loves. Leandro, who was exiled from Spain for supporting Joseph Bonaparte, lived in France for some years. He was a great admirer of Molière, and made excellent though somewhat free translations of two of his plays. He was also the first to translate Hamlet directly from the English text into Spanish.
