Delvaux, Laurent (b Ghent, 17 Jan. 1696; d Nivelles, 24 Feb. 1778). Flemish sculptor. From 1717 to 1728 he worked in England, sometimes in collaboration with his fellow Fleming Peter Scheemakers, with whom he made a number of church monuments. In 1728 they visited Rome together; Scheemakers returned to England in 1730, but Delvaux remained until 1733, when he moved back permanently to Flanders, settling at Nivelles, between Brussels and Charleroi, where he ran a busy workshop. His commissions came largely from churches and the court in Brussels, and occasionally from English clients. He worked in wood as well as marble and also made lively models in terracotta.

Laurent Delvaux , 1695-1778, Flemish sculptor. After studying in Rome, Delvaux developed a style that combined French neoclassic and Italian baroque elements. Ornate in the extreme, his works express a marked coldness. Delvaux's Hercules is in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Brussels.
