Laurence Hutton

Hutton, Laurence

Hutton, Laurence (1843–1904), critic and editor. Born in New York and educated at Princeton, he served as drama critic for the New York Evening Mail in the 1870s, then became literary editor of Harper's Magazine. He held the post until 1898, frequently contributing reviews and essays on the theatre. Hutton was one of the first to revive interest in books on American theatrical history and to have his criticisms collected in hardcover editions. Among his books, which have been described as “chatty, impressionistic,” were Curiosities of the American Stage (1891) and the five‐volume American Actor series (1881–82). He was an organizer of the Authors' Club and of the International Copyright League.
