Riding, Laura (Laura Reichenthal)

Riding, Laura (Laura Reichenthal) (1901–91), born in New York City, once associated with the group that published The Fugitive, was long expatriated in Mallorca and England before returning to the U.S. (1959) to live in Florida. Her early writings include Contemporaries and Snobs (1928) and other critical works, as well as A Survey of Modernist Poetry (1927), one of several collaborations with Robert Graves. Her fiction includes A Trojan Ending (1937), about the Trojan War; Lives of Wives (1939), considering Cyrus, Aristotle, Caesar, and other pre‐Christian figures as husbands; and Progress of Stories (1935), a series of 17 stories, progressively “of Lives …of Ideas …and Nearly True,” and an essay on storytelling. An enlarged edition appeared in 1982. Her early poetry is gathered in Collected Poems (1938). After a long silence she published Selected Poems (England, 1970; U.S., 1973) and The Telling (1975), a philosophic essay. First Awakenings: The Early Poems of Laura Riding (1993) prints hitherto unpublished poems, written between 1920 and 1925. The Word “Woman” and Other Related Writings (1993) collects essays, some previously unpublished. She was married (1941–69) to Schuyler B. Jackson and sometimes published as Laura (Riding) Jackson.
