Lascaux
Lascaux. Site of a cave near Montignac in the Dordogne region of France containing some of the finest examples of prehistoric paintings ever discovered. The cave was found in 1940 by some boys searching for a lost dog and rapidly attracted great interest; it opened to the public in 1948. Although the paintings (probably dating from about 15,000 bc) were remarkably well preserved, they deteriorated so rapidly because of the effect of the large number of tourists on the cave's environment that it had to be closed in 1963; a facsimile was opened nearby in 1983. Various animals are portrayed, some over-life-size, and it is generally believed that the cave served as a centre for magical hunting rites rather than as a dwelling. As well as the paintings there are some engravings cut in the rock. See also Altamira.
