Larnaca
Larnaca (Greek: Lárnax; Turkish: Lârnaka), Cyprus Kitium/Kition, Khittim, Salina, Zeno Settled by the Phoenicians during the 9th century bc, the present name is derived from the Greek lárnax ‘funerary urn’ or ‘sarcophagus’, due to a large number of tombs in the area which were discovered as a result of the activities of grave robbers. It is believed that the name was given to the city by the Ottoman Turks soon after they conquered Cyprus in 1571. Salina was adopted in recognition of the nearby salt lake; Zeno was the name used by the Lusignans and the Venetians before the arrival of the Turks.
