Lappeenranta

Lappeenranta, Finland Lapvesi, Villmanstrand The harbour area used to be known as Lapvesi ‘Lap Water’ and was an important trading post in the early 17th century. Count Per Brahe (1602–80), the Swedish governor‐general of Finland (1637–41, 1648–54), proposed to his government that Lapvesi should be raised in status to a town and in 1649 Christina (1626–89), Queen of Sweden (1644–54) agreed. On the coat of arms she received was a somewhat primitive‐looking man so the town was called Villmanstrand ‘Wild Man's Shore’ in Swedish. The town was ceded to Russia in 1743 before becoming Finnish in 1812. The Finnish Lappeenranta ‘Lap's Shore’ comes from ranta ‘shore’ and Lappeen, the genitive of Lap.
