Langton
Langton, a fairly common name, usually ‘long farmstead or estate’, OE lang + tūn; examples include: Langton, Church & Langton, East Leics. Lang(e)tone 1086 (DB), Chirch Langeton 1316, Estlangeton 1327. Langton, Great N. Yorks. Langeton 1086 (DB), Great Langeton 1223. Langton Herring Dorset. Langetone 1086 (DB), Langeton Heryng 1336. Manorial affix from the Harang family, here in the 13th cent. Langton Matravers Dorset. Langeton 1165, Langeton Mawtravers 1428. Manorial addition from the Mautravers family, here from the 13th cent.
However the following have a different origin: Langton Durham. Langadun c.1040. ‘Long hill or down’. OE lang + dūn. Langton, Tur Leics. Terlintone 1086 (DB). Probably ‘estate associated with a man called Tyrhtel or *Tyrli’. OE pers. name + -ing- + tūn. The name was later remodelled under the influence of nearby Church & East Langton. |
