Govinda, Lama Anagarika

Govinda, Lama Anagarika (1898–1985). Western student of Buddhism who was drawn first of all to Theravāda and later to Tibetan Buddhism. Born E. L. Hoffman of Bolivian and German parents, he was an artist by profession and became interested in Buddhism on a visit to Sri Lanka in 1928. This motivated him to become an anagārika. Later he went to Tibet where he met his guru, Tomo Geshe Rinpoche. He describes his experiences in Tibet in his autobiography The Way of the White Clouds (1966). Other of his works include The Psychological Attitude of Early Buddhism (1937) and Foundations of Tibetan Mysticism (1960).

Govinda, Lama Anāgārika

Govinda, Lama Anāgārika (1898–1985). Interpreter of Tibetan Buddhism to the W. and founder of Ārya Maitreya Mandala. He was born E. L. Hoffmann of Bolivian and German parents. He went to Śri Lankā in 1928, in pursuit of an interest in burial mounds, and was attracted by Buddhism. He became an anāgārika. From a conference in Darjeeling, he felt a strong compulsion to go to Tibet, where he met his guru, Tomo Geshe Rinpoche. He made many journeys in Tibet, and described both these and his reasons for transferring to Tibetan Buddhism.
