Saint Clair, Canada‐USA A river that forms part of the boundary between Canada and the USA, and a lake, also forming part of the border, into which it flows. The river is named after the American general Arthur St Clair (1736–1818); the lake is also said to be named after him, although it was originally named by Robert Cavelier, sieur de la Salle, after St Clare (1194–1253) because he, or the Franciscan missionary Father Louis Hennepin, discovered it on her feast day, 12 August (now 11 August) 1679.
