Lake Louise 1 1/2 mi (2.4 km) long, alt. 5,680 ft (1,731 m), SW Alta., Canada, in the Rocky Mts., in Banff National Park. Noted for its scenic beauty, it is surrounded by high peaks, glaciers, and snow fields, which are reflected in its waters. The lake was explored in 1882 and later was named for Princess Louise. It has become a popular year-round tourist and mountain-climbing center. The lake drains to the E into the Bow River.

Lake Louise, Alberta/Canada Holt City, Laggan Originally a camp for construction workers on the Canadian Pacific Railway, it was renamed in 1914 after the lake which had been discovered in 1882 and which itself honoured Princess Louise (1848–1939), fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and wife of the Marquess of Lorne, governor‐general of Canada (1878–83).
