Lake Edward

Lake Edward or Edward Nyanza 830 sq mi (2,150 sq km), in the Great Rift Valley, central Africa, on the Congo-Uganda border. It lies at an altitude of c.3,000 ft (910 m), is c.50 mi (80 km) long, and has a maximum width of c.30 mi (48 km). Lake Edward is connected with the Nile system by the Semliki River, which drains the lake in the north and flows into Lake Albert. Lake Edward has many fish, and hippopotamuses abound on its southern shores. Henry Morton Stanley visited the lake in 1889 and named it after Albert Edward, then the prince of Wales (later Edward VII ).

Edward, Lake, Democratic Republic of the Congo‐Uganda Albert Edward, Idi Amin Dada A lake visited by Sir Henry Morton Stanley in 1889 and named by him Albert Edward Nyanza after Albert Edward, the Prince of Wales, who later became Edward VII, King of the UK (1901–10). Nyanza is the Bantu for ‘lake’. In 1908 the name was simplified to Lake Edward. In 1973–9 the lake was renamed Lake Idi Amin Dada after Idi Amin (1924/5–2003), Ugandan president and military dictator (1971–9); when he was overthrown the previous name was restored.
