lagan
lagan, a term in maritime law for goods which are cast overboard from a sinking ship with a buoy attached so that they may be recovered later. It is a term that was also sometimes used to refer to articles still within a sunken ship as it lies on the bottom. The word comes from the Old French lagand, lying. In the UK, lagan now legally comes under the definition of wreck, and any lagan found has to be reported to the Receiver of Wreck.
