Lafayette
Lafayette . 1 City (1990 pop. 23,501), Contra Costa co., NW Calif., a residential suburb in the San Francisco-Oakland area; settled 1848, inc. 1968. The city is a horse raising and agricultural trading center, especially for walnuts; there is also light manufacturing.

Lafayette, USA 1. Indiana: laid out in 1825 and named after the Marquis de Lafayette (1757–1834), a French aristocrat who was making his last visit to the USA at the time; he fought with the Americans against the British, commanding a division and later an army during the War of Independence (1775–83).2. Louisiana: founded in 1824 as Vermilionville and situated on the Vermilion River, it was renamed after the Marquis de Lafayette in 1884.
