Lachlan Macquarie

Lachlan Macquarie , 1761-1824, governor (1809-21) of the British colonies in Australia. Sent to replace the corrupt rule of the officers of the original convict guard, he established a sensible and humane administration, stressing public building, land reform, and fair treatment of convicts and freedmen.

Macquarie, Lachlan (1762–1824) Scottish-born Australian colonial administrator. He served as governor of New South Wales (1809–21); the colony was chiefly populated by convicts, but during his term of office he improved its prosperity, expanded opportunities for former convicts, and promoted public works, further settlement, and exploration.
