Labrador

Labrador

Labrador, Newfoundland and Labrador/Canada A region, the mainland section of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, and a city. This region may have been what Leif Eriksson, the Norse explorer, called Markland ‘Land of Forests’ c.1000. It is not clear how the present name arose, but one explanation is that Gaspar Corte‐Real, the Portuguese explorer, named it Terra de Lavradores ‘Land of Labourers’ in 1501 after he had seen the land being cultivated; another is that one of Corte‐Real's sailors, a farmer, lavrador, from the Azores, saw Greenland which was named Terra del Lavrador. This name evolved into Labrador and was subsequently transferred to the mainland part of Newfoundland. Labrador City takes its name from the region as does the Labrador Sea between it and Greenland. Labrador gives its name to the Labrador retriever, first bred here.
