LMS

LMS. The ‘London Missionary Society’ was founded in 1795 by a body of Congregationalists, Anglicans, Presbyterians, and Wesleyans who combined to promote Christian missions to the heathen. No form of denominationalism was preached by its members, but decisions about the form of Church government were to be left to those whom they should convert. The Society came to be maintained almost exclusively by Congregationalists, and in 1966 responsibility for its work passed to the (then Congregational) Council for World Mission.
