Kushiro, Hokkaidō/Japan Named after the Kushiro River at the mouth of which it lies. The name is said to come from kushi ‘bracelet’ and ro ‘way’. The manufacture of bracelets was an important industry here and kushiru means ‘gem’ in Korean. However, the origin of the name may be the Ainu kush‐ru ‘passage’.
