Kurt Seligmann

Seligmann, Kurt

Seligmann, Kurt (1900–1962). Swiss-born painter, graphic artist, designer, and writer who became an American citizen. He was born in Basle and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva and the Academy in Florence. From 1929 to 1938 he lived in Paris, where he became involved with the Surrealist movement. His paintings of this time had a magical and apocalyptic character, with hazy shapes and swirling draperies fading into the landscape. He also made various Surrealist objects. In 1939 he emigrated to the USA and settled in New York, where he taught at Brooklyn College and the New School of Social Research. His work in his new country included sets for ballet and modern dance and a series of pictures called ‘Cyclonic Forms’ in which he purported to express his reactions to the American landscape. He made a serious study of the occult and wrote a book called The Mirror of Magic (New York, 1948); a British edition appeared in 1971 entitled Magic, Supernaturalism and Religion. Seligmann died in an accident when he slipped in icy conditions and discharged a gun he was carrying.
