Kuressaare

Kuressaare

Kuressaare, Estonia Arensburg, Kingisepp Founded in the middle of the 14th century around a castle that had been built on the site of a 12th‐century Livonian fort and named after a knight called Arnold. This name was subsequently superseded by Kuressaare from a personal name, Kure, and the Estonian saare ‘island’. In 1952–91 the town was named after Viktor Kingisepp (1888–1922), leader of the Estonian Communist Party (1918–22), who was born here. It then reverted to its earlier name.
