Kuiper Airborne Observatory

Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) A NASA Lockheed C-141 transport aircraft modified to carry a 0.91-m Cassegrain reflector for infrared astronomy. The KAO operated from 1975 to 1995 and flew at altitudes of up to 13.7 km. Its replacement is the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). The KAO was named after G. P.Kuiper.
