Krk
Krk, Croatia Kurik, Kurykta, Curicum, Vecla, Veglia The largest island in the Adriatic Sea and its main town built on a hill overlooking the sea. The present name, whose meaning is unknown, is derived from the Roman Curicum which in its turn came from the Illyrian Kurik and Greek Kurykta. After a period of Roman rule, the island passed to the Byzantines, who renamed the town Vecla, and then to the Croats before falling to Venice which ruled in 1480–1797 and used the name Veglia. In Italian this means ‘vigil’ or ‘watch’ and may be a reference to the town fortifications, including a watch tower, built by the Venetians. The Austrians then held it until 1918 when it became part of the newly created Yugoslavia and adopted the present name.
