Kotor

Kotor, Montenegro/Serbia and Montenegro Acruvium?, Catarum, Cattaro Certainly a small fortified settlement in Roman times with a sheep‐fold (in Serbo‐Croat tor) which in due course became known as Kotor from kod tor ‘by, or near, the sheep‐fold’. It took the present Slav form of its name in the 11th century, the Slavs having arrived on the Adriatic coast in the 7th century. Between c.1196 and 1371 it was subject to the early Serbian state and in 1391–1420 it was an independent city‐republic. It also gives its name to the Gulf of Kotor.
