Koper

Koper, Slovenia Insula Caprea/Capros, Aegida, Justinopolis, Caput Histriae, Capodistria Formerly an island (it was joined to the mainland by a causeway in 1825) Insula Caprea ‘Goat Island’ or Capros was probably the name of a small Roman settlement which developed into the Roman city of Aegida. It was later named ‘Justin's City’ after Justin II, Byzantine emperor (565–78). It was captured by the Venetians in 1279 after which it was made the capital of Istria, hence Caput Histriae from which the Italian Capodistria ‘Capital of Istria’ is derived. It remained in Venetian hands until 1797 and, after a brief period under the French in 1797–1813, it became Austrian until 1918 when it was incorporated into Italy. It was part of the Free Territory of Trieste until being passed to the Slovene Republic within Yugoslavia in 1954.

Koper

Koper , Ital. Capodistria, town (1991 pop. 24,704), in Slovenia, on the Istrian peninsula in the Gulf of Trieste. It is a fishing port and has salt mines and a radio factory. From 1278 until 1797 the town was the capital of Istria under Venetian rule. The Treaty of Campo Formio, which dissolved the republic of Venice, transferred Koper to Austria. The town passed to Italy after World War I and became part of the Free Territory of Trieste in 1947. In 1954, Koper was annexed to Yugoslavia and incorporated into the constituent republic of Slovenia. It preserves the aspect of a Venetian town, with a Romanesque cathedral and campanile, a Gothic loggia, and a pinnacled town hall.
