Kokkola
Kokkola, Finland Gamlakarleby The former name, which was replaced in the 20th century, meant ‘Old Karl's Village’ from the Swedish gamla ‘old’, the personal name (although the individual is not known) and bý ‘village’. The meaning of the present name is not known, although kokko means ‘bonfire’.

Kokkola , Swed. Gamlakarleby, city (1996 pop. 35,510), Western Finland prov., W Finland, on the Gulf of Bothnia. It is a port with lumber, machine, and leather industries. It was chartered in 1620. |
