Kitami
Kitami, Hokkaidō/Japan Nokkeushi, Kitakaigan Founded as an Ainu settlement known as ‘Edge of a Field’, it was renamed Kitakaigan ‘North Coast’ (although it is some 25 miles (40 km) from the coast) from kita and kaigan ‘coast’. In 1942, when it became a municipality, it was given its present name which means ‘to go to war against’ or ‘to punish’. It can also be said to come from kita and mi ‘see’, an indication that Sakhalin Island could be seen from here on a fine day.
