Kiss of Peace
Kiss of Peace (also Pax), the mutual greeting of the faithful in the Eucharistic Liturgy, as a sign of their love and union. It is first mentioned by St Justin Martyr. Originally an actual kiss, the form of the Peace has been modified in all rites. In recent years hand-shaking has become common in the W. In E. Orthodox practice a Kiss of Peace is also exchanged by the whole congregation at the end of Easter Mattins (which forms part of the midnight vigil; see PASCHAL VIGIL SERVICE).
