Kirovohrad
Kirovohrad, Ukraine Yelizavetgrad, Zinovyevsk, Kirovo, Kirovograd A province and a city which was founded as a fortress in 1754. In 1765 it was named ‘Elizabeth's Town’ after Empress Elizabeth Petrovna (1741–62). In 1924–36 it was named after Grigoriy Zinoviev (1883–1936), Bolshevik revolutionary, chairman of the Comintern (1919–26), and one of Lenin's† principal colleagues, whose birthplace this was. In 1936 it was renamed Kirovo and three years later Kirovograd ‘Kirov's Town’ after Sergey Kirov†, for complicity in whose murder Zinoviev was executed. The present name is the Ukrainian spelling of the Russian Kirovograd. Because there was already a city called Kirovgrad, an extra o was inserted.
